BAM's first performance was in 1861, and since then, the institution has been the leading force behind Brooklyn's performing arts and cultural programs.
Originally based in Brooklyn Heights, BAM relocated to 30 Lafayette Avenue in Fort Greene in 1907. The center still stands there today. It now boasts the Howard Gilman Opera House; the Harvey Lichtenstein Theater; a four-screen cinema; the BAMcafé, where visitors can eat and listen to live music; and a giftshop selling books, videos, and gifts.
BAM's programs consist of everything from film festivals to international opera, theater, and dance performances. Each year its Next Wave Festival celebrates actors, musicians, artists, filmmakers, and writers throughout the world with special programs and events. BAM is also affiliated with the Brooklyn Philharmonic, which performs throughout the year.
