DUMBO at a Glance:

DUMBO's name is actually an acronym that stands for "Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass." Located between the Manhattan Bridge and the Brooklyn Bridge, the spacious buildings and cobblestone streets that make up this once industrial neighborhood now attract artists and families alike.

DUMBO on the Map:

DUMBO stretches from Hudson Street to Fulton Street and from Prospect Street to John Street (the East River). The neighborhood is situated between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges and includes the area east of the Manhattan Bridge to Vinegar Hill.

DUMBO Transportation:

To get to DUMBO, take the F to York St or the A or C to High Street.

DUMBO Schools:

There are no schools in DUMBO. Residents generally send their kids to the public and private schools in Brooklyn Heights, which is just a ten-minute walk away.

DUMBO Real Estate:

Once an affordable neighborhood, DUMBO is quickly filling up with luxury condos and expensive lofts. The neighborhood's views and proximity to Manhattan make it a highly desirable place to live. Rentals are difficult to find, and the average selling price of an apartment ranges from $1,000,000 up to $2,000,000.

DUMBO Bars and Restaurants:

Tourists line up for the famous pizza at "Grimaldi's." A few feet away, the "Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory" makes for an excellent dessert. Locals go to "Bubby's" for pancakes, "RICE" for a quick rice-inspired meal, or the upscale "River Café" for a romantic night out. Sugar addicts won't want to miss the sweet croissants at "Almondine" or a trip to "Jacques Torres Chocolate," where the hot cocoa is legendary. Other popular spots for dining and drinking include "Superfine," "Hecho en Dumbo," and "Five Front."

DUMBO Activities & Attractions:

DUMBO's growing art community offers many galleries and exhibits to peruse, and St. Ann's Warehouse, a converted spice-milling warehouse on Water Street, has an ongoing calendar of music and performing arts events. During the summer, the neighborhood hosts "Movies with a View," a free outdoor movie series that brings thousands of people to the area. The Empire-Fulton Ferry Park is sandwiched between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and is a peaceful spot to take in beautiful views of the bridges and the Manhattan skyline.

DUMBO Shopping:

Looking to furnish a DUMBO loft? You're in luck. Stores like "Wonk NYC" and "Tivoli Home" offer high-end furniture. Or, for more affordable options, try "ABC Carpet & Home Warehouse" for great deals on the chain's luxurious home items; "West Elm" for modern furniture, dishes, and linens; or "Antiquarius Imports" for bargain collectibles and designer-quality goods. "Zoë" offers upscale clothes for men and women, and "P.S. Bookshop" is a great place to find used and rare books.
