How To Find a Volunteer Opportunity in Brooklyn

By Kristen Goode, About.com

Looking for the perfect volunteer opportunity in Brooklyn? There are plenty of organizations that want your help. Here's how to find them.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 1 hour

Here's How:

  1. Decide what you're interested in.
Do you like kids? Are you an animal lover? Concerned about the homeless? Once you've narrowed down the issues you care most about, it will be easier to find the perfect volunteer match.

  2. Go online.
Many websites exist to connect willing volunteers with needy organizations. Try Idealist.org, which allows you to search for opportunities by location and/or interest. NYCares and OneBrick also offer a variety of volunteer options.

  3. Visit the Mayor's Volunteer Center.
The Mayor's Volunteer Center, an excellent NYC-based site, is easy to use and offers volunteer matches for kids, adults, and even groups.

  4. Head to the library.
Complete an online application, and work as a homework helper, welcome visitors to the library, help adults learn to read, or teach computer skills.

  5. Offer to help at your favorite museum.
Visit the museum's website, and look for any volunteer requests or opportunities it may offer.

  6. Know that you don't have to make a long term commitment.
Volunteers are always needed for holidays and special events. Your time is greatly appreciated, regardless of whether you can commit to six hours or six months.
